Alexandria, VA, May 15, 2018 – The number of IT jobs grew 0.05% sequentially last month to 5,335,200 according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association of the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment grew by 0.96% since April 2017 adding 50,700 IT workers.
Engineering employment increased by 0.22 percent sequentially to 2,586,500. On a year-over-year basis, growth in engineering employment increased by 1.88% since April 2017 or 47,700 engineering workers.
“While economic downturns result in slow or negative job growth because of lagging demand, we are seeing anemic job growth in IT because of a lack of supply,” stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. “Despite robust demand in many IT skill sets, we simply do not have enough qualified IT professionals. This is the result of insufficient long-term investment in growing our domestic talent supply in STEM fields and highly restrictive immigration policies of this Administration. It is unfortunate we are not fulfilling the growth potential of one of our most dynamic employment sectors,” added Roberts.
The following table presents information about the total number of jobs in certain sectors that provide a significant amount of employment for IT and engineering professionals.
Technical note: TechServe Alliance’s IT Employment Index and Engineering Employment Index are the first specific measurements of IT and engineering employment. These are created monthly by studying the ongoing staffing patterns of a dozen IT and computer related occupations in 22 industries and industry sectors employing significant numbers of IT workers and nearly two dozen engineering occupations in 30 select industries and industry sectors employing significant numbers of engineering workers. Both Indices are based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, which is subject to monthly revisions, and is revised accordingly. Both indices were rebenchmarked this month with revisions going back several years. The next major revision will be published in February 2018. Additionally, from time-to-time TechServe Alliance reviews and adjusts the algorithm utilized to calculate the indices.
