Alexandra, VA, December 11, 2013 — The number of IT jobs grew 0.07 percent sequentially last month to 4,518,200, according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association of the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment has grown by 5.17% since November 2012 adding 222,000 IT workers.
Engineering jobs grew once again in November, up 0.15 percent sequentially last month to 2,474,900. On a year-over-year basis, engineering employment has grown by 1.51% since November 2012 adding 36,800 engineering workers.
“While IT employment has grown for 27 consecutive months with 23 of those months being successive all-time highs, the rate of growth has continued to decelerate over the past year. On the engineering side, there was only modest growth during most of 2013,” stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. “While consistent employment growth month over month is to be applauded at any level, the forces that earlier in the year turbo-charged the growth rate in IT appear to have abated. With the New Year approaching and a federal budget deal on the horizon, I am hopeful we can return to a more robust rate of job growth in 2014,” added Roberts.
IT and engineering jobs are found in virtually every sector and industry in varying degrees. The following table presents information about the total number of jobs in certain sectors that provide a significant amount of employment for IT and engineering professionals.
Technical note: TechServe Alliance’s IT Employment Index and Engineering Employment Index are the first specific measurements of IT and engineering employment. These unique measurements of total IT and engineering employment are created monthly by studying the ongoing staffing patterns of a dozen IT and computer related occupations in 22 industries and industry sectors employing significant numbers of IT workers and nearly two dozen engineering occupations in 30 select industries and industry sectors employing significant numbers of engineering workers. Both the monthly IT Employment and Engineering Employment Indices are based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, which is subject to monthly revisions, and is revised accordingly. Both indices are also subject to periodic revisions and annual rebenchmarking which includes revisions to several years of employment data. The next major revision will be published in February 2014.
